Image and Video Clarification

Image and Video Clarification
After recently reviewing my progress alongside the brief, I noticed that one of the pieces of criteria states  "ALL images must be taken by you". Whilst all my shots have been taken by me so far, I feel it is necassary to clarify how this has been made possible. While filming my music video, I have regularly used a remote control for the camera I have been using - a Canon 700D. This has given me the ability to angle and construct my desired shot(s), before I step into shot, with the remote often being concelaed in my pocket or hand etc.

However, I also wish to clarify that I have had some assistance with carrying equipment and similar tasks. Whilst I am grateful for my friends helping me, I would just like to make clear that all footage and images were constructed, planned and taken by me.

I just felt the need to address this, as I did not want to compromise any marks I could gain later in the coursework.

Props List - N

Props List
For my video, I will not require many props, as the majority of the story will be told visually through the use of the shots and the actors involved. However, there are still several items I will require, each of which I have included below. I have attached a picture of each prop, as well as notes on how each one will be part of the narrative.

Watch - The watch used will be similar to the one featured to the left. The overall style of the watch is not important, as it is the actual presence of the watch that be more interesting to the viewer.

The watch will serve as a clue to the main character, hinting that the missing person has been in the location recently. The lead character will discover the watch in one of the 'daytime' scenes, with the watch giving further suggestion as to what the lead character is searching for. The character will pick up and examine the watch, before continuing in the direction he was previously walking, as the watch will inform him that he is clearly walking in the right direction. As I mentioned, the watch itself is mostly unimportant for the narrative, meaning I will likely just use my own for the required scenes.

Smartphone - Similarly to the watch, the smartphone will also act as a plot device for the narrative. I had the idea of the lead character discovering the phone, proceeding to turn the phone on to check its image background. The background image would be of the lead and missing characters, thereby establishing that they have some form of relationship to the audience. Like the watch, the particular type of phone will not be crucial to the plot, the only requirement being that it can display personal images on its 'home' or 'lock' screen. Therefore, I will likely use my own smartphone, as I know it has these requirements.

'Missing Posters' - This prop would also be used as a plot device, as (when completed) it would show pictures of the missing character. This would be featured later in the video, as otherwise it would ruin the viewer's suspicions of what the lead character is looking for. Below is a quick 'mock-up' of a missing poster I made in roughly five minutes. I did some brief research in order to see what real-life missing posters look like, in terms of composition and layout. The poster used for the video would not require much detail, as the emphasis would be placed on the title and images featured on the sheet. As you can notice, the mock poster below does not feature any images of the missing person - this is becuase I have not yet cast an actor to play this role, however I will add images in once the role has been cast.

Original Images Before Manipulation - O

Original Images Before Manipulation
I will be using this image for my magazine advert as I believe the use of light and colour to silhouette the 'artist' is very effective and eye-catching.

I will be using this image for the front cover of my digipak, as I believe the use of an interesting location in juxtaposition with the artist being present is highly effective, as well as being conventional of other digipaks.

I will be using this picture as the background for the 'disk holder' panel of the digipak, as I believe the subtleness of the photo will entice but not distract the consumer from the actual disk.

This image will be used for the inside sleeve or 'booklet' sleeve in the digipak, as it is similar to the magazine advert photo, thereby creating a link between the two texts, which is also conventional of promotional packages.

Risk Assessment - L

Risk Assessment
Below is an embedded Google Docs sheet containing the risk assessment I will be using whenever filming my music video. As you can see, there are not many risks which I believe I will encounter when filming, however I will be sure to add to the assessment if any other risks become apparent.

Film Schedule - K

Film Schedule
Below is a film schedule I created in order to act as a guideline for how the filming of my video should take place. Whilst the phone booth and nighttime scenes actually occur at the opening of the video, I detail these scenes towards the end of the schedule, as they would be shot later in the day.

Also please note that I may not actually film each scene on one day, however the timings on the schedule will still apply.

Costume Shots - I

Costume Shots
Below is a YouTube video detailing my costume the lead character (most likely being played by myself) as well as my reasons for choosing each aspect. I realised upon editing that the first half of the video was shot in Manual Autofocus mode. I realise that this is an annoyance however I hope it does not ruin your enjoyment of the video.

Storyboard - H

Storyboard
This is a basic storyboard I hand drew in order to show the basic storyline and shots that will feature in my music video.

Whilst the sequence of shots may be changed in post production and future drafts, I believe this initial storyboard offers an accurate impression ofwhat my video will hopefully resemble upon completing filming and post production.

Ancillary Draft Texts - G

Ancillary Draft Texts
Digipak
For the digipak for Kavinsky's 'Outrun', I will be creating a six-panel digipak. Below is the template I will likely follow for the digipak, with the digipak 'unfolding' to have the front and back covers on the reverse of the digipak. Below is also an example of what my digipak would resemble, with the CD case folding out to be on the very right of the digipak.

Below is a YouTube video featuring mock-ups of what my digipak (and magazine ad) will hopefully resemble upon completion. https://youtu.be/JZ62I2Pfi-E

Magazine Advert
As mentioned in the video below, I will be designing my advert to resemble a film poster, as I believe this will create a unique aspect for the advert. Here (left and right) I have also featured a few examples of what my advert will hopefully resemble (in terms of composition/layout). The positioning of the title at the bottom of the image is something I will definitely incorporate into my album design - as I believe this would help to better draw the reader's eyes accross the entire advert, rather than just the top.

Mock Digipack and Magazine Ad (Hand-drawn) - F

Mock Digipack and Magazine Ad (Hand-drawn)
Below are my hand-drawn mock-ups of my Digipak and Magazine Advert, the two ancillary texts I will be making alonside my music video for 'Nightcall'. Firstly I will discuss my Digipak, before shortly moving onto my Magazine Advert.

Here is the front panel/cover and inside booklet sleeve for my Digipak. For the front cover I have decided to include an image of the phone booth featured in the music video. I chose to include this as it would create a sense of uniform accross my texts, with themes and imagery being shown throughout. I will express similar themes accross each of my texts as, as I found in my Magazine and Digipak research, promotional material typically features or consists of the actual album or content advert is promoting. Therefore, by using the phone booth for the Digipak, I would be able to link my texts together, making it easier for my target audience to link each piece to the artist/track.

As you can see here, I also chose to draw on a slot for a possible booklet which are often featured in Digipaks such as the one I will be making.

Here are the panels for the front and right-inside tray for my Digipak. As you can see with the back cover, the image of the phone booth is also included, but without the lead character being present within the booth. I thought that using similar images for each cover would help to convey a sense of mystery for the audience, whilst also being reminiscent of other Digipaks such as The 1975's first album (See Digipak analysis blog). As also mentioned previosuly, the majority of the 'white space' shown on this mock would actually be black on the final version, I just did not want to waste time/ink on colouring this rough mock-up.

For the tray, I will likely use a simplistic image of one of the environments shown in my music video. I chose not to draw a specific image for this panel, as I felt it would be the panel most likely to be dependant on what image I think suits the Digipak best at the time of creation.

This is a much smaller sketch I made of the layout of the Digipak. I made this as it would allow me to visualise the structure of my Digipak further into creating it, acting as a reference point for how it should be structured.

This is a mock-up of my magazine advert I will also be making alongside my video and digipak. This drawing hopefully provides a general idea of how the advert will appear upon completion, with the basic composition likely remaining the exact same on all future drafts. As with my Digipak, the image(s) I have included on my ancilliary text mock-ups may not be representative of my final versions, as I may take other pictures which are more suitable to the text and the genre itself. I chose to make these mock-ups to provide a basic interpretation of the key ideas and themes that will be present in my ancilliary texts.

Pitch of my Music Video - E

Pitch of my Music Video
Today I presented my basic premise for my music video to my A2 Media Studies Class, and overall I believe I was successful in making my video sound appealing to a potential audience. Whilst I did use my previous brainstorms and mood board, I mostly described the video off the top of my head, as I felt that this would make for a more personal and invested description of my ideas. I also played a snippet of the track 'Nightcall', which was met with praise from several of my classmates, as they enjoyed the eeriness and 'dark' tones of the song. When asked, everyone in the class gave my idea a 'green light', meaning I will be able to present my future pieces without disruption. I am very pleased with this result, as it allows me to continue to develop my initial ideas into a finalised piece, without having to change my original plan and vision for the video. After the lesson, I also collected some primary, quantitative data from some of my classmates. I did this to ensure that my potential audience were actually happy with my proposal, and was able to more discreetly ask for any changes or improvements that should be made. Below are graphs showing the results I collected from my feedback.

Overall, did you find my idea for the video interesting/appealing?
This result was incredibly pleasing for me, as it shows that the vast majority (76%) of my target audience would be immediately interested in viewing my video. Even the remaining 24% is pleasing to me, as they still think they would possibly watch the video. These results are therefore beneficial to me, as they show the potential audience I would attract upon publishing my video.

Song Lyric Analysis - D

Song Lyric Analysis
Below are the lyrics for the track 'Nightcall' by Kavinsky, the track I will most likely be making a music video for. In this post I will be analysing the lyrics of the song, in terms of what they express about the song as well as how I will relate them to my own video. I have colour coded the most interesting lyrics, as this will make it easier for me to reference them in my analysis.

I'm giving you a night call to tell you how I feel
I want to drive you through the night, down the hills
I'm gonna tell you something you don't want to hear

I'm gonna show you where it's dark, but have no fear

There's something inside you
It's hard to explain

They're talking about you boy
But you're still the same

There's something inside you
It’s hard to explain
They're talking about you boy
But you're still the same

I'm giving you a night call to tell you how I feel
I want to drive you through the night, down the hills
I'm gonna tell you something you don't want to hear
I'm gonna show you where it's dark, but have no fear

There's something inside you
It's hard to explain
They're talking about you boy
But you're still the same
There's something inside you
It's hard to explain
They're talking about you boy
But you're still the same

There's something inside you (there's something inside you)
It's hard to explain (it's hard to explain)

They're talking about you boy (they're talking about you boy)

But you're still the same

The track actually only features eight lines, however they are repeated to extend the song to its 4 minutes 19 seconds length. In a mainstream 'pop' song, this repetition would likely be viewed as forcefully lengthening the song, and would likely be rejected by listeners. However, for Nightcall, I believe this is beneficial in establishing the songs sense of rhythm and routine, the verses acting like a rally between the two singers. I believe that this would actually suit my music video, as it would help to strengthen the narrative of the video - allowing the viewer to make sense of the various scenes and locations that will be featured in the video.

The verses beginning with "I'm giving you a night call to tell you how I feel" would take place at night, with the "There's something inside you" taking place in the daytime. Therefore, I think that the repetition of the lyrics will actually benefit me in portraying my narrative on screen, as the ability to show each location twice will inform the audience that the video does follow some form of story, and that the scenes shown are not completely random.

The opening line of the song, "I'm giving you a night call to tell you how I feel" immediately sets the tone of the track, with the processed singing-style of Kavinsky acting as a preview to the rest of the songs eerie sounds and style. The singer in the opening line addresses the listener as "you", suggesting he has some sort of relationship with the other 'caller' or the actual listener themselves. The specific inclusion of the modification 'night' to call is highly interesting, as people would typically phrase this simply as a call. Therefore, the unusual inclusion of 'night' could suggest that the speaker perhaps feels more comfortable at night, allowing him to be more emotionally open to the listener. The line itself could suggest that the singer has some form of relationship with the listener, as the line almost resembles a child 'checking in' with a parent.

The following line, "I want to drive you through the night, down the hills" furthers my suggestion that the singer takes comfort at night. The reference to "the" hills, also conveys that the singer assumes the listener to know what he is referring to, thereby giving more evidence to my thoughts that he has some sort of relationship with the listener.

After this, the line "I'm gonna tell you something you don't want to hear" can be heard. This suggests a sense of danger to the listener, given that the singer even knows the "something" will be unpleasant. The listener never actually discovers what this "something" is, making the line even more sinister.

"I'm gonna show you where it's dark, but have no fear", adds to my idea of the singer taking comfort at night, as he even tells the listener not to be afraid of where the singer is taking them. This clearly shows that the singer has some desire to also comfort the listener, as he is clearly concerned with the listener's feelings.

The next verse is where the female singer is introduced to the track, with her lyrics taking on a much more positive and joyous style. Her first lyrics are “There’s something inside you
you - It's hard to explain". This reference to the 'something' inside the singe is kept incredibly vague, allowing the listener to question what the female singer is referencing. The 'something' could refer to some form of characteristic, or something more supernatural or sinister. This lack of detail in the lyrics works well in my opinion, as the audience are left to interpret the lyrics for themselves, without the need for explicit detail or explanation.

"They're talking about you boy - But you're still the same" are the following lines for the singer, with the lyrics remaining incredibly vague for the listener. The reference to whoever it is talking about the 'boy' is kept, similarly to the previous lyrics, incredibly ambiguous - meaning the listener has to interpret the lyrics completely for themselves. Again, I believe this benefits the song, as it helps to develop the mysterious tones already established earlier in the song.

After this verse, the opening verse can be heard again, with the female singer's verse being featured twice after before the song ends. As I mentioned earlier, the repetition of lyrics in the song will actually serve to enhance the narrative of my music video, as it will help to give my audience a sense of how the narrative functions.

Summary:
By analysing the lyrics of 'Nightcall', I believe I have gained a greater understanding of how I will be able to fit my narrative around the song. As mentioned, the overall structure will also benefit me (and in turn, my video) as the repetition of the verses will help to develop the day and night aspect of the video - the main 'unique' aspect of my video.

Mood Board - C

Mood Board
Below is a slideshare presentation containing an in-depth analysis of my Mood Board for my upcoming music video. I have also included a direct hyperlink in case the embed feature does not function correctly.

The Board Itself:

This is the mood board I created in order to act as a visual aid when choosing shot types and colour schemes further into my coursework. I printed my mood board onto A4 paper before sticking it to a piece of A3 paper. I did this as it allowed me to add notes to the sides of the board, allowing me to give brief details on why some images were used. With the images themselves, I chose mostly my own pictures, as I felt that this would be a true reflection of my own ability and style. The images I included were used mostly for the use of showing their light and colour, given that the contrast between lights is a pivotal theme in my music video. The images also reflect the kind of locations that will be featured in my music video, however this will be explored further in a later post.

Permission Letter - B

Permission Letter
Below is the email I sent to the label 'RecordMakers' to request permission for me to use the track 'Nightcall' for my music video. I hope that the label responds positively, as this would allow me to continue with my initial plan without having to modify the track or narrative.

*Note - I will be providing an in-depth research post into 'RecordMakers' further into my blog.

"Dear Sir/Madam

I am a student at George Spencer Academy in Nottingham, England. I am writing to you to request permission for me to use the track ‘Nightcall’ by Kavinsky in my upcoming Media Studies project. The track would be used alongside a music video, which would be non-profitably released on YouTube. I would be sure to include the relevant links to your website in order for viewers to purchase your products. The video will be used for educational purposes, meaning I would not make any financial gain from your content. I hope you accept my request to feature the track, as I am a huge fan of Kavinsky and your other artists.

I look forward to your response,
Kind Regards,
Edward Barker."

As you can see, I made sure to emphasise that I will not be profiting from the label's content, as this would violate several copyright laws. Instead I have offered to include links to the label's website and store in the description of my video(s), as this would allow interested viewers to purchase the track for themselves, allowing RecordMakers to profit from their own content.

Initial Ideas Brainstorm - A

Initial Ideas Brainstorm
Below is a video detailing my initial ideas and plan for my music video. In the video I dicuss the process of how my simple ideas eventually developed into thorough concepts and ideas that I will hopefully include in my final music video.

Song and Artist Choice

Song and Artist Choice
For my music video, I have decided to use the track 'Nightcall' by the Synthwave artist Kavinsky. I have chosen this song as I believe I will be able to utilise it to convey themes and ideas effectively. Given that I already had general ideas of what I would likely include in my fourthcoming music video, I soon realised that Nightcall would allow me to incorporate my ideas effectively.  Further into my Blog I will be detailing future ideas and scene ideas I will incorporate into my video, as well as requesting permission from Kavinsky's record label, Record Makers.

Below is a link to the track on YouTube.

Summary: My analysing this video I have been able to observe how a storyline can be split into two halves, with the protagonist in this video being enraged and depressed because of his love interest, as well as the context of how he came into this state. The decision to shoot most of the 'earlier' scenes in the daytime, with the consecutively later scenes being set at night helps to create a distinct and clear storyline for the audience. This has thereby shown me that through the use of Mise en scene and location, music videos do not have to take place in a typical consecutive manner, and that the audience can easily distinguish two separate storylines or scenes with the use of visual assistance.
